ABSTRACT

The topic of this paper is apt because it gives the opportunity to write not only in one’s academic expertise meant just for the lecture hall but also it offers us opportunity to dwell more comfortably on our cherished zone, science and religion – a general topic that could appeal to all and sundry. When it is a debate where Science and Religion – two areas of knowledge seemingly contrary to each other but in reality and naturally so close and endearing to one another – confront each other, the topic sparks off controversial issues among some people and a comforting thought to the others; but becomes more attractive and thought provoking to the researcher. Religion and Science are not contradictory entities. Example of success from great scholars of the past as the life and work of the Great St Albert – a theologian and a Natural Science master is illuminating and should encourage us in our search for the truth of the matter both from the scientific and from the religious point of view; spurring us to delve more seriously into the idea expressed in the title of this paper. It is not so much to reach Albert’s wisdom and insight but to acknowledge the facts as we try to match them with our contemporary socio-cultural world experiences of peculiar scientific and religious pursuits.

This paper opens various avenues that are far reaching to the opportunities available in science education. Some of the recommendations are that an entrepreneurship clubs (horticulture, floriculture, and aquaculture) should be organized and encouraged in science education departments so as to popularize entrepreneurship education; students should be taken out for field trips to various industries, factories, companies and related areas of interests. This will offer them opportunity to see and observe things which they did not have in their school’s workshops and laboratories.

ABSTRACT

Shrines/sacred groves are amongst the heritage resources of a people and hence can be sustainably packaged for heritage, tourism promotion and community development. In a traditional African society, heritage resources are inclusive of a people’s belief system and other socio-religious values. Shrines/sacred grove have been posed with series of threats to their existence and heritage tourism potentialities in communities. With the adoption of ethnography as the major research method, this paper studied a shrine in the Gbagyi Land in Nigeria with major interest on their various benefits (both to these sacred places and their visitors) and existing measures to that effect. Some measures including adult education and community development initiatives were suggested to augment the existing ones towards addressing various value issues at these sacred places; to enhance their relevance in the heritage, tourism, industry and community development of North Central Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

Annually, each state prepares its budget which is defended before the relevant authorities and approval is put in place while implementation follows. Available statistics suggests that the annual budget has not been able to improve the lives of citizens over the years, occasioned by complaints that budgets have become annual rituals without visible implementation.  This study evaluated budget implementation in Ondo State, Nigeria from 2005 to 2014 using secondary data obtained from the State Board of Internal Revenue and Ministry of Finance respectively. Also, it examined the relationship between approved budget and budget implementation. Collated data were analyzed using percentages, mean, standard deviation and Pearson correlation analysis. Six public sectors namely administrative, regional, economic, social services, law and justice and debt repayment were identified and assessed for the study. In aggregate, 68% of the total approved budget was implemented during the ten year period. Furthermore, the results showed that there is a positive and strong significant relationship between approved budget and budget implementation given the correlation coefficient of r= 0.908 (P < 0.05). Specifically, budget implementation of 125% in 2005 was the highest level while 55% in 2013 was the lowest level from 2005 to 2014. Others are 86% (2006), 96% (2007), 95% (2008), 62%, (2009), 71% (2010), 57% (2011), 56% (2012), 55% (2013) and 57% (2014) indicating irregular implementation of approved budget in the state. Likewise the sector that has the highest implementation was Law and Justice being 97% and Administrative sector had the least implementation at 57%. Based on the findings of the study, it was concluded that budget implementation in Ondo State had been going down since 2010. It is recommended that all sectors especially those directly affecting the citizenry need to be focused and implement well.
