ABSTRACT

Colonialism and education are two main ways through which European powers perpetuated under development in Africa. Though education predates colonialism, but the European nations used their strong powers to introduce a system of education that were so foreign, whose aim was to ensure that African nations were subjugated and exploited. Colonialism arose out of the need for European nations to have direct political control over their colonies so as to ensure the protection of their economic interest. So, colonialism is not just merely a system of exploitation, but one whose main purpose was to repatriate the profits to the metropolis. By exporting the profits created by African Labor to Europe, the development of Europe was assured. However, education, no doubt had serious influence on the development of Nigeria. In this study, efforts were made to juxtapose both the positive and negative impacts of education on national development. The study revealed that the benefits that accrued to Nigeria in terms of social, political, economic development outweighed the negative effects on the cultural negligence. It was recommended that more budgetary allocation should be given to the education sector so as to bring it back to its status when the colonialists were at the helm of affairs in Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

This paper discussed the relationship between parental background support in relation to occupation, home environment and students’ academic performance. The research design adopted for this study was correlation research design. The study was based on Conflict theory, which sees the purpose of education as a means of maintaining social inequality and preserving the power of those who dominate the society. The study was carried out using questionnaire, achievement test and focus group discussions, the questionnaire was researcher designed and it was based on closed ended questions with options of A, B, C, D, E and F, respectively all the instruments were validated by the supervisory team and the reliability was obtained by pilot testing of questionnaire and test-retest for achievement test and arrived at co-efficient alpha 0.83 and 0.81 respectively. The population was also all the public senior secondary school students in Sokoto state. A total number of twelve public senior secondary schools, with three thousand four hundred and twenty eight (3,428) as the population of SS II students, were purposively selected within the six educational zones to represent the total population. Qualitative data collected were analyzed through thematic analysis by coding and transcription, while the quantitative data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient. The major findings of the study were: Parental background support in relation to occupation has relationship with student’s academic performance. Parental background support in relation to home environment has relationship with student’s academic performance.  The study recommended that: parents that are found to be of lower socio-economic status who cannot provide support for the academic activities of their children, should utilize those community development programmes meant for poverty eradication and skill acquisition, such as National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP), family support programme, agricultural loan scheme and so on, that will provide financial support and job security. It was also recommended that parents should endeavour to provide required academic support at home such as parental commitment and material support. That is to be fully involved in their children academic activities and to provide study facilities at home, which include teaching and learning materials. This will enhance good academic performance.

ABSTRACT

Using data collected from Cross River University of Technology, Calabar Campus, this study investigates how the use of WhatsApp as a mass media is a tool for information dissemination in tertiary institutions. It examines specifically, how and what WhatsApp is used for. The study is anchored on the Uses and Gratification Theory as well as the Cultivation Theory. To achieve a conclusive study, 10 members of CRUTECH community, Calabar campus were interviewed. The survey method used was the simple random sampling method where 200 copies of questionnaire were distributed to staff and students in all the seven faculties of the institution and also the different directorates that make up the Calabar campus. A total of 194 copies of questionnaire were retrieved. The study revealed that a great percentage of students and staff (both academic and non-academic) use WhatsApp for information dissemination. The study also revealed that the use of WhatsApp offers them a cheap, good and positive means of communication, though negatively, it affects their academic performance, as it takes up much of their study time. Be that as it may, the positive impact of WhatsApp outweighs its negative impact. The study also shows that WhatsApp is a veritable tool of socialization amongst staff and students of the university campus. It is a tool that bridges the gap between the lectures and their students, as well as other members who share views, suggestions and opinions through this social network. The study concludes that it is a very good tool for effective communication, a bridge for building good and cordial relationship amongst equal and unequal in the social realm, and also an effective learning tool especially for maximum users of the network. Therefore, the study finally concludes that WhatsApp is necessary for information dissemination in tertiary institution, so therefore WI-FI should be provided and made available to all students and staff within certain hours by the University authorities
