ABSTRACT

The work investigated work-family conflict as a predictor variable of marital conflict using criterion sampling technique, 33 mothers working in Banks in Enugu metropolis of Enugu State in Eastern Nigeria, were drawn to participate in the study. The participants were living with their husbands, and have had at least one child. They were aged between 26 and 55 years. They had a minimum qualification of Higher National Diploma and B.Sc and above, were Christians and have Igbo cultural background. The hypothesis was that there would be a significant relationship between work-family conflict and marital conflict of working mothers in the banking sector. Two sets of instruments were used to generate the data thus: 1) Okonkwo (2009) work-family conflict interference subscale to assess work interference in the family. 2) Omeje, (1998)marital conflict behaviour checklist Scale. A co-relational between work-family conflict and marital conflict (r=0.117, r2 = 0.0104, p ≥0.05). The result was discussed in relation to literature. It was concluded that work-family conflict does not influence marital conflict and should not be emphasized on while carrying out research on work-family conflict.

E-mail: nwabuiroideyi@yahoo.com

ABSTRACT

Man arrived in the world without pre-information of his life- journey and without knowledge of himself and the world and remained in that state until he became conscious of himself and the world. As he became conscious of himself and the world, creative thought and experience have been informing him about himself, the world and his place in it. Knowledge so far acquired has enabled him to embark upon a lot of projects. Courtesy of rationality and experience, conformed by common sense, knowledge and wisdom, the project of all projects man has been working to attain is his well-being. Habu Dawaki, as an agent of history, a continuous student of human nature and a friend of humanity, has taken up the task to show up moral light for man to find his way and thus make a success story of the project of his well-being. The significance of this work is that it will reactivate the will and restore hope in those men and women whose will and hope have remained dormant as they have given up struggle due to a lot of problems they have encountered in their life- journey. Methods of exploration, analysis, criticism, motivation and prescription have been adopted in order to give the topic a deserved treatment.

This research provides empirical information on the level of house ownership among the residents of Gombe Local Government Area. Thus, house ownership status, demographic and socio-economic factors influencing ownership status of dwelling units, as well as mode of owning a house were observed. 396 household heads were randomly interviewed and systematic sampling techniques were used to obtain streets and house samples. Descriptive statistics and qualitative techniques were used to analyze data obtained from the field. Results show high proportion of house owners in Gombe L.G.A but majority of them live in houses inherited from their families hence, most of them are low income earners. Further demographic results show high number of males house owners which are mainly Fulanis by tribe and majority of them are civil servants with low educational qualifications and most of them believe in Islamic religion and almost all of them are married. The study recommends that: government and philanthropies should improve income of low income earners, women awareness and empowerment is needed to improve their house ownership status through purchase/construction, more awareness campaign is needed on the issue of segregation, effective government intervention on housing scheme is also recommended and lastly government should encourage formal education to higher levels in the study area.

Key Words:  demographic, socio-economic and house ownership.

ABSTRACT

The mass media has always been seen as having immense power to influence, control and bring about innovative change in society.  It has the power to both hinder and accelerate progress. Thus this paper examines how media representation of the Nigerian woman perpetuates gender inequality.  Using secondary data, the paper argues that women are more often underrepresented, misrepresented and stereotyped in the mass media.  This not only further reinforces the gender inequality and discrimination they experience in society, thereby slowing the pace of achieving gender equality and empowerment.  It inevitably also affects their ability to fully contribute to sustainable national development.   The paper goes on to suggest that the same media can be constructively used to promote gender equality, making necessary recommendations to achieve this.

Keywords: Media representation, gender equality/inequality, sustainable national development.

Income Inequality and Health Outcomes: A Challenge to Sustainable Development in Nigeria-Focus on Nasarawa State

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the impact of income distribution and inequality on the health of the people in Nasarawa State using socioeconomic and cross sectional data from the three Senatorial districts of the state drawn from a field survey and analyzed through a bivariate model. The study finds that income inequality which has worsened over the years in Nigeria and especially in rural areas has affected health outcome of the populace negatively. The overriding reason is lack of access to the means of production. Although individuals desire to lead healthy lives due to its multiple impact on their social, economic, productive and political life, this is often difficult to realize due to the incidence of poverty accentuated by low incomes and rising inequality. Not only are income levels low in most developing countries, but that its distribution is severely skewed against the poor leading to worsening inequality. This has implications for the attainment of optimum health of the populace as intended by the Millennium declaration of the United Nations. If health care is to be financed from private incomes- as is currently the case-and against a poor and unorganized insurance framework, then the health of the people will be greatly compromised. This then means that individuals will become more vulnerable to disease conditions with its attendant negative effects. Opportunities that can enhance incomes of the very poor in society must be vigorously addressed if attaining sustainable development is to be achieved.

ABSTRACT

National recession is a negative term used to describe a halt in economic growth for two consecutive quarters. When national economy stagnates, there is widespread drop in spending; a process that is popularly termed as “an adverse demand shock”. This of course neither augurs well for the wellbeing of the citizens nor promotes national prosperity. Effective communication is a vital tool for giving accurate and detailed information to the masses on current happenings in any society. It is also a crucial way of getting viable feedbacks from the citizenry about their perceptions of diverse sectors of national life including economic performance. In this sense, it serves as a tool for enriching national solutions to economic issues. The advantages of quality management in boosting economic performance and increasing organizational profitability cannot be overstated. Yet, academic discourses that emphasize the use of effective communication and quality management strategies, two vital elements of Business management, to curb the challenges of national recession are scarce. This paper therefore, advocates that despite evidence of improving economic strands capable of exiting Nigeria from economic recession, accurate, valuable, and effective information needs to be made available to the private and international investors on the state of Nigerian economy in general and recession in particular to motivate them to improve their investments in Nigeria. The paper also recommends that quality management should also be taken seriously to improve customers’ confidence and participation in the economy as a way of curbing further economic recession.

ABSTRACT

This paper is basically written to fulfill an academic requirement. Nevertheless, it is hoped that it would go a long way to encourage more meaningful development efforts on issues relating to the effects of Fulani herdsmen-farmers crisis on open grazing in Nigeria. This paper is not intended to break an entire new ground, rather, it is undertaken in the premise that it will add to the existing literature in the area of humanities from the biblical perspectives. In addition this paper is very necessary especially at this point of Nigeria’s development, when the crises between the farmers and Fulani herdsmen are becoming a threat to the economic development in Nigeria. This paper is expected to guide Nigeria government and all those whose livelihoods are affected to gain understanding of how Fulani herdsmen-farmers crisis can affect food security. However, the findings will also provide useful background for Nigeria government to adopt the method of Moses in handling grazing problem. The methods employed in this work are: Historical and analytical. The historical method helped to unravel biblical experience of herdsmen, while analytical method helped in analyzing facts gathered from the biblical perspectives to juxtapose the current experience of herdsmen in Nigeria. The paper recommended that, the Nigeria government should learn from the experience of the Bible as a yardstick to control the Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria.

Mutually set-targets and organizational performance

Orji, Nwosu Ndem

ABSTRACT

Organizations want to succeed but require people to do the necessary task that would eventually translate into success or performance. Setting targets over time has always been a potent strategy to deliver organizational objectives. However, setting targets to derive the necessary benefits is one thing and the delivery is just another. Over time it has become a tradition for most organizations to set their targets in isolation, and completely devoid of the involvement of the employees. The study is an investigation of the import of mutually set targets on employees’ effectiveness and organizations performance in selected banks. A structured questionnaire was used to acquire data from a sample of 340 respondents. Data for the study was analysed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Coefficient Correlation statistical technique. The study reveals that the more targets are mutually set the more effective the employees and the more productive organization become in terms of performance. The study also reveals that various associated factors, including a non-consideration or non-involvement in setting targets, non-conducive work environment and poor reward system, among others are key factors that can go a long way to demotivate workers, enhance employee turnover and to that extent scurry the performance of the organization. Inter alia, the study recommends that management commit to change policy and restructure divisive organizational policy that negates mutuality in setting targets for the organization. Develop and facilitate convergence sessions that conglutinates all categories of employees and management to integrate and bond beyond work interface.

Key words: Target setting, mutually set-targets, organization, employee effectiveness, employee turnover.

The Role of Christian Women as Peace Makers in the Home: A Biblical Study of Abigail

Abodunrin Adeniyi Olufemi

ABSTRACT

Women are different from men. The much publicised gender equality notwithstanding women should be proud of their different roles in their homes. Since women are regarded as traditional home keeper, prayer warrior, teaching children, spiritually gifted and financial supporter to the family. This paper therefore, focuses on the important parts being played by Christian women in the home. It proceeds to discussing the significant role of a particular women in the Bible, who saved her family from destruction and that is Abigail in the Old Testament. The supreme dignity of human being is expressed in the concept that men/women are “created in the image of God”. This is immediately related to both male and female (Gen. 1:27). They are both the image of God. Apparently speaking, both man and woman are created by God. It was a woman that was taken from the side of Adam to be suitable mate, as Adam was made first. God created the woman as the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone, I will make a helper suitable for him” (Gen 2: 18). This is more than being an assistant. However, being a “helper” does not imply that the women was inferior or subservient to the man, the same Hebrew word ˋezer translated as “helper” means is a co-worker and is used to describe God, Himself in Psalms 33:20, 70:5, 115:9-11. This image of Abigail is further supported by many Christian women in our contemporary time. When a house hold occupies the preeminent place in society, women have a strong role in decision making and consequently exercise considerable power in the household. This is especially true for complex household such as Abigail the extended or multiple – family units that made up a significant number of domestic compounds in Israelites villages. No doubt this was true of Nabal’s household. Because of his wealth, his home was most likely quite complex, probably more likely a compound. Keywords: Christian Women, Peace Maker, Abigael and Feminism
