ABSTRACT

After many years of transition to civil rule and its attendant problems, a very strong political antidote for the cure of socio-economic and political maladies that afflicted the slumbering giant of Africa (Nigeria) was finally discovered on May 29, 1999. It is the best system of government that can solve human’s problems. This is because, as countries all over the World including Nigeria are returning to democracy, it is assume that, democracy is a desideratum for development. Despite it’s indices aimed at development, it’s rebirth is doing more harm than good to Nigerians that instead of development, Nigeria’s case is on the reversal. Some of the reasons for this are: bad leadership, non-provision of infrastructural facilities among others. It is recommended that, Nigerian leaders should lead with the fear of God, understand and provide the basic needs of the citizens, divert the economy possibly to agriculture, and create job opportunities.

ABSTRACT

This study investigated work pressure and somatic complaints among Nigeria bank workers. Using criterion sampling technique. 90 bank workers comprising 47 males and 43 females bank workers from 3 commercial banks and 3 community banks in Enugu metropolis were drawn to participate in the study.         The bank workers were within the ages of 25-55 years. Job related tension scale (Kahn, Wolfe, Quinn, & Snoek, (1964) to measure work pressure and Enugu somatization scale (Ebigbo, 1981; Ebigbo, et al, 2016) to measure somatic complaints were administered individually to the participants. A correlational design and statistics were used for data collection and analysis to test the hypotheses which stated that work-pressure would not significantly correlate with both frequency and intensity of somatic complaints among bank workers. The results showed a low negative correlation -.044 on frequency of somatization (n = 90); and a low positive correlation .092 on intensity of somatization (n = 90) between work pressure and somatic complaints.  It was suggested that other variables capable of influencing somatic complaints should be studied since a negative correlation was established on frequency and a positive correlation was established on intensity, with strong implication on frequency of symptom manifestation.

Poverty therefore becomes one of the “monsters” that must be fought from all its various faces. These faces include: having the face of unemployment, a gender face, face of a criminality, face of corruption, loss of human dignity, face of hunger, etc. A poor person is more likely to be unemployed; he commits crimes such as armed robbing to survive; he lacks knowledge, initiative, skills, leading to begging. Entrepreneurship development is thus one of the paths through which poverty can be fought. Entrepreneurship is a process of creating and managing a business through innovation and generating of business ideas to achieve desired objectives. It is infact a very important agent of innovation, growth and technical progress. The way forward in the fight is to participate in the diversification of the economy. Some of the ways include the development of agriculture and the agro-allied industries, small and medium industries, provision of products and services. The socio-economic implications of entrepreneurship include reduction in unemployment, acquisition of skills, educational attainment, providing new products and services, improvement on old systems – thus improving the quality of life, the improvement in the quality of life, the issue of entrepreneurship development, which is a parasea to reduction in unemployment, development in the various sub-sectors of agriculture, increase of income per capita, increase in consumption, better health services and reduction in the dependence on foreign economies through dependence and consumption of local production.

This study therefore, investigated the contributions of Islamic financial products on financial inclusion in Kano State. The study uses a sample of 378 customers of Jaiz bank in Kano. This meant that 378 copies of the questionnaire were administered to solicit responses from the customers of Jaiz bank on the contributions of Islamic financial products on financial inclusion. The scales used for measuring Ijara Financial inclusion and Murabahawere adopted from multiple sources, data were analyzed using multiple regressions. It was found that two independent variables namely; Ijara, and Murabaha had significant contributions on financial inclusion; it is therefore recommended that Jaiz bank should make the repayment period to be according to customers’ needs. It is also recommended that government should ensure costumer protection, a supervisory framework for Islamic finance and Islamic financial education be introduced at different levels of education i.e. primary to tertiary level, as all these could be helpful in encouraging Nigerians to use Shari’ah-compliant financial products and services

Intervention Analysis of Daily Moroccan Dirham/Nigerian Naira Exchange Rates

Ette Harrison Etuk & Vincent Nchedo Chukwukelo

Department of Mathematics

Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Nigeria

ABSTRACT:

Daily Moroccan Dirham (MAD)/Nigerian Naira (NGN) exchange rates, from 12th March 2017 to 4th September 2017, show an abrupt jump on 4th August, 2017. This work is an attempt to model the series using an ARIMA intervention model.  The pre-intervention rates are adjudged non-stationary by the Augmented Dickey Fuller test necessitating differencing. The first differences are adjudged stationary.  An MA(1) model is fitted to them. Forecasts on the basis of this model for the post-intervention period are obtained and their differences from their actual observation counterparts are modeled to produce the transfer function. The intervention forecasts agree closely with the actual post-intervention forecast which is indicative of model adequacy. Hence the intervention model may be used in the management of the rates.

Benue State University, Makurdi Nigeria

ABSTRACT

This study examined the impact of foreign direct investment in telecommunication on economic growth in Nigeria covering the period 1981 to 2014.  Econometrical techniques were employed for the analysis of data. The Augmented Dickey Fuller unit root test showed that all variables were integrated at first difference. The study found that there is positive and significant impact of foreign direct investment in telecommunication on economic growth in Nigeria in the long run only. The study also found that an initial deviation from equilibrium can corrects itself back to long run equilibrium at 71% yearly.  The diagnostic test revealed that residuals were normally distributed, and both serial correlation and heteroskedastrcity were found absent in the model.  The study therefore recommended that the Nigerian government should aggressively initiate policies to change the expenditure pattern in the country that would stimulate the economy towards rapid and sustained economic growth path, and create enabling environment in order to attract more of foreign investments in the country through tax incentives, development of infrastructural facilities, and improvement of the institutional qualities and capabilities of the state. More so, training of human capital to augment increasing FDI in Telecommunication in the country to achieve economic growth is imperative.
