ABSTRACT

Education is widely regarded as the route to economic prosperity, the key to scientific and technological advancement, the means to combat unemployment, and the foundation of social equity. Based on this fact, the Federal Government of Nigeria like other developing countries has at different times made frantic efforts in increasing the number of children enrolled in primary schools though there are still many more who are not enrolled and who do not complete the programme. In Nasarawa State, North Central Nigeria, the system has been saddled with problems ranging from issues of enrolment, funding, infrastructure, teaching personnel and curriculum provisions. This basic sector of education has been and still being largely neglected due to poor government policies. For the past two years, for instance, the personnel of this critical sector have been placed on what is now popularly called SALARY PERCENTAGE in the state. This has compounded the problems of public primary education in the State. For quality education assurance these issues need to be properly addressed. This paper argues that quality indicators should move beyond inputs governments provide in terms of infrastructure, and also pay serious attention to teachers, materials and what goes on in the classroom with special reference to teaching and learning time utilization. The paper, using both empirical and secondary data, is designed to showcase how quality public primary education has been maligned in Nasarawa State as a result of governance crisis.

ABSTRACT

Sexual immorality is one of the serious moral decadency in our society today. Although both the Old and the New Testament is against it, however, it has increased in different dimension at alarming rate. It is an act that is humiliating and degrading to men and women due to the lust of flesh and pleasure. This practice can lead to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and traumatic stress disorder in the system which in turn leads to crisis in human body which can also lead to death. For that our pastors should teach their members to shun sexual immorality. The non-government organization (N.G.O.s) should encourage abstinence among young people.

ABSTRACT

From prehistoric times, education has been the major source of information and knowledge. Its importance cannot be overemphasised. The fact remains that education plays a vital role in the development of every nation; hence it is of paramount importance for every citizen to be adequately educated. On the other hand, technical and vocational education is much more pivot to national development. In addition to general education, technical and vocational education is that branch of education which involves the study of applied sciences, technologies as well as the acquisition of various practical skills, understanding and the knowledge in relation to occupations in various sectors of economic life. It is a major means of preparing young adults for occupational fields and effective participation in the world of employment or work. In the light this, it is deducible that technical education is geared towards preparing people towards self and national development. In a situation where youth unemployment has taken the driver’s seat in the nation, a lot of efforts need to be geared towards development and sustaining technical education in our quest for a sustainable national development. Of a nation, the aim of this paper is to look into the role(s) played by technical education in the development especially developing ones, draw inferences and proffer necessary solutions towards a sustainable national development.

ABSTRACT

The study on Self Related Fail-Causes in Examination in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education, Benue State University, Makurdi was carried out to identify self related factors responsible for fail in examination. Three research questions were framed and answered while three hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance for the study. A cross-sectional descriptive survey research design was used to carry out the study. A population of sixty four (64) students was drawn from 200, 300 and 400 levels of the Department of Vocational and Technical Education respectively. Descriptive statistics of mean was used to answer the three research questions while analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to test the hypotheses. The findings of the study include among others that students at times prepare for examination and sometimes students could be erratic and occasionally prepared for examination. Findings also indicate that sometimes students brood over the examination being awaited intermittently. It was concluded that the school setting embraces a test-conscious and examination-giving culture in which the lives of graduates are in part determined by their examination performance. The study also affirmed that examination performance is predetermined by human characteristics manifested in various forms such as fear, anxiety, stress and doubt about capabilities. Students are anxious as to what questions to see during examinations and expectations of their performance summed up as results. It was recommended that students should make adequate preparations for examination and employ all the tactics for preparation for examination before going in to take examinations.

ABSTRACT

This study assessed the Principal’s Administrative Strategies on the Management of Secondary School in Gombe Metropolis, Gombe State Nigeria. To serve as a guide, two specific objectives, two research questions and two nul hypotheses were formulated. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study and the population of the study was 1021 comprises 17 principals and 1004 secondary school teachers in Gombe metropolis. A sample of 279 respondents was selected using proportionate random sampling techniques. Instrument used for the study was a structured questionnaire with a five-point Likert typed scale titled Impact of Principals’ Administrative Strategies on Management of Secondary Schools Questionnaire (IPASMSSQ). The instrument was validated by two experts in the field of Educational Administration and Planning, Department of Educational Foundations and Curriculum, Faculty of Education, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Pilot study was carried out and the data for the pilot study were analyzed using split halve method of reliability. Cronbach’s Alpha was used to compute the reliability coefficient where 0.97 reliability coefficient was obtained. Descriptive statistics (mean score and standard deviation) was used to answer the research questions and t-test analysis was used to test the null hypotheses at 5% (p < 0.05) significant level. The findings revealed a significant difference in the opinion of principals and secondary school teachers on the Assessment of administrative strategies performed by principals on the management of secondary schools in Gombe metropolis, Gombe State, Nigeria. It was concluded that principal’s budgeting and planning strategies aid teachers to be more effective in the teaching and learning activities thereby influencing smooth running and management of secondary schools. ABSTRACT

The study was carried out to investigate the Effect of Class Size on the Academic Achievement of Students in Basic Science and Technology in Gwagwalada Area Council FCT Abuja, Nigeria. The study had 2 specific objectives, 2 research questions and 2 null hypotheses. Quasi experimental research design was used. The population of the study comprised of the JSS 3 students of all the Junior Secondary Schools in Gwagwalada Area Council, FCT Abuja. A sample of 109 students was drawn from Junior Secondary School Old Kutunku in Gwagwalada, Abuja. Purposive sampling was used to select two intact classes from the selected school. The students were divided into two groups (experimental and control group). The instruments used for the study was a self-formulated Basic Science and Technology Achievement Test (BSTAT), designed by the researchers. It consists of a 50-item multiple choice achievement test with options A-D. It was validated by two experts in the field of test and measurement, Faculty of Education, University of Abuja. Pilot test was conducted in a different school using the test re-test method, and a reliability co-efficient of 0.82 was obtained using Pearson Product Moment co-efficient, indicating that the instrument is highly reliable. Data collected was analyzed using mean, standard deviation and t-test statistics. The findings revealed that students in the small class performed better than those in the large class. Also there is no significant difference in the mean achievement scores of male and female students. The null hypothesis tested at 0.05 level of significance indicated that there is a significant difference between the achievement scores of those in the small class and those in the large class. It was therefore concluded that large population in our classes has a negative impact on students’ academic performance. The study recommended, among others, that the correct ratio of one teacher per 35 students should be encouraged, as stipulated by the national policy on education. This will enable teachers to teach well and to ensure good classroom management without much difficulties and challenges. Also, large population in classes should be avoided because it has effect on student’s performance. The study also recommended that public address system and a conducive environment should be provided to enable effective communication especially in large classroom.
